NHG Health Musculoskeletal Day 2026 is a two-day event advancing musculoskeletal (MSK) health through professional knowledge exchange and community engagement. MSK Day brings together stakeholders across healthcare, built environment, community, and public sectors to advance population-based and preventive approaches to musculoskeletal health in Singapore. Our slogan “Move Well, Live Well: From early years to golden years” underpins our belief in taking a life course, population health approach to MSK health as we strive for a more active, more mobile Singapore of the future.
Recognising that MSK health is shaped not only by healthcare, but also by environments and everyday living, Day 1 features the Healthy Environment, Healthy Community Symposium, which explores how built environment design, community spaces, and cross-sector collaboration can support movement, participation, and well-being across the life course. Day 2 focuses on population MSK health and prevention, with a Scientific Congress examining system-level strategies for integrated care and exploring the latest research and innovation in this space. Concurrently, our community Health Fiesta will be engaging the public through interactive activities, talks, and demonstrations that promote MSK prevention and self-management.
This event brings together clinicians, public-sector leaders, researchers, and community partners through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions. It aims to advance musculoskeletal (MSK) health through a population-based and preventive lens, moving beyond episodic, reactive care towards integrated approaches that recognise MSK conditions as long-term, life-course challenges shaped by healthcare, environments, and everyday living.
As the leading cause of disability in Singapore and the world, there is an urgent need to tackle this fast growing silent epidemic. With Singapore entering into a superaged society, managing and prevention MSK condition is a critical piece in the puzzle as we seek to close lifespan-healthspan gap and help Singaporeans age gracefully into their golden years. The event facilitates cross-sector collaboration across healthcare, built environment, and community stakeholders, supporting more coordinated and sustainable approaches to MSK health.
Join us in advancing integrated, population-centred approaches to MSK health and well-being.

Prior to his current appointments, Prof Tan served as the inaugural Chief Health Scientist and Executive Director of the new Office for Healthcare Transformation in Singapore’s Ministry of Health from 1st January 2018 to 30th September 2023. He was also the Chair of MOH’s Healthier SG Implementation Office till 2024. He was the President of the National University of Singapore from 2008 to 2017. He held the positions of NUS Provost, then Senior Deputy President from 2004 to 2008. He was former Dean of the NUS Faculty of Medicine and served as the Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health from 2000 to 2004, in which capacity he was responsible for leading the public health response to the 2003 SARS epidemic. He was also the Chairman of the Board of the National University Health System from 2011 to 2018.
Prof Tan is a key leader in Singapore’s Biomedical Sciences Initiative since its inception in 2000, for which he was awarded the National Science and Technology Medal in 2008. He has also received the Public Service Star in 2003; the Public Administration Gold Medal in 2004; the Meritorious Service Medal in 2015; the Distinguished Service Order in 2022 and Public Service Star (COVID-19) in 2023. Prof Tan is the recipient of several international awards and is the first Singaporean to be elected as an international member of the US National Academy of Medicine.
A renal physician, he obtained his medical training at NUS, and research training at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford.
Professor Michael Nilsson, MD, PhD, FAFRM (RACP), is the Director of the Centre for Rehab Innovations (CRI) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. A recognised leader in health care, academic medicine, and research leadership, he has successfully guided major medical research institutes, university hospital divisions, and research centres of excellence. Internationally, he is regarded as a leading clinical academic in Rehabilitation Medicine and translational neuroscience.
Over his career, Professor Nilsson has made significant contributions to the understanding of health preservation and long-term recovery in neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. His research has demonstrated how key factors—such as psychological stress, physical activity and enriched surroundings—can meaningfully influence functional recovery. These insights have contributed to the development of modern preventive and restorative rehabilitation models that emphasise the interplay between the individual, their environment, and long‑term health trajectories.
Recently, he has led multidisciplinary programs developing and evaluating AI‑based clinical decision support tools that enable tailored rehabilitation programs across diverse care settings. This aligns with his broader commitment to integrating digital health solutions, personalised care pathways, and innovative technologies into contemporary rehabilitation and routine clinical practice.
Professor Nilsson has championed research exploring how enriched environments, green spaces, architectural design and multimodal stimulation influence recovery, resilience, and sustained wellbeing. In this work, he collaborates extensively with national and international partners across health systems, universities, and industry. These joint initiatives aim to deepen understanding of preventive health principles and translate research discoveries into scalable, practical, and sustainable models of care that support healthier and more resilient communities.
Professor David Hunter is a clinician-scientist who has helped reshape how osteoarthritis is understood, studied, and managed. As the Florance and Cope Chair of Rheumatology at the University of Sydney, Professor Hunter brings together frontline clinical care, rigorous epidemiology, advanced imaging, and health policy to address one of the major unmet needs in modern medicine.
Internationally recognised as a leading authority in osteoarthritis, Professor Hunter has played a central role in moving the field beyond a narrow, end-stage surgical paradigm towards earlier intervention, better models of care, and evidence-based prevention. His research has directly influenced international clinical guidelines, national health strategies, and large-scale service delivery programmes, translating high-quality science into real-world impact for tens of thousands of people living with osteoarthritis. Through leadership roles spanning academia, clinical practice, publishing, and global consortia, he has helped align research, policy, and practice in a field long characterised by fragmentation.
Equally important has been his commitment to communication and collaboration, bridging disciplines, engaging consumers, mentoring the next generation of researchers, and fostering global partnerships. Whether through landmark clinical trials, international consensus work, or public-facing platforms such as guideline development and educational outreach, Professor Hunter’s work exemplifies how sustained, translational research can change both clinical care and health systems at scale. His career offers a clear demonstration of how thoughtful leadership and evidence-driven innovation can deliver lasting improvements in population health.
